Tired Pony  Reply with quote

Hello there everyone.

For the last five days Iíve been in Portland Oregon making the Tired Pony record with some old friends and new friends. It has been going ridiculously well. Weíre having a hell of a lot of fun.

Tired Pony are:

Peter Buck
Scott McCaughey
Troy Stewart
Iain Archer
Jacknife Lee
Richard Colburn
And me

Everything weíve recorded so far (11 songs in 5 days) has been fully live. By that I mean all seven of us playing at the same time, vocals an all. Most have been done in two takes and none have taken more than four. Itís a fast and loose record that feels very natural and special. Of those 11 songs most are mine one is Iainís and one is Peter and Scottís.

Songs titles so far are:

Held in the Arms of Your Words
Get On The Road
The Deepest Ocean There Is
Failing Breaks
Mount Hood
Your Bible
Silver Atoms
I Finally Love This Town
Point Me At Lost Islands
In The Stockade (Buck/McCaughey)
I Am The Landslide (Archer)

Weíve had some incredible guests so far including M Ward (who played some beautiful guitar and laid down some harmonies on the tracks HeldÖ and Failing Breaks); Fred Chalenor, whoís in right now as I type playing some double bass on a bunch of tracks and yesterday we had some celestial pedal steel and trumpet from Paul Brainard. Also there will be a few more very special guests to be announced once they have been recorded. Donít want jump the gun in case, for any number of reasons, they fall through.

Weíre in the process of setting up and when itís up and running Iíll put some of the little video clips weíve been filming in here as we go.

As for the original country music direction intended well, itís not exactly gone that way but you donít know whatís gonna happen until you all sit down and play together and the first time that only happened 5 days ago. Country tinged letís say. Americana maybe. Can an Irish guy write Americana. Probably not. Rest assured itís sounding lovely whatever it is. I couldnít be happier. Absolutely love Portland too so itís great to spend some time here.

So I hope the first week of the new decade has treated you all well and Iíll post when the other site is up. Itíll be very sparse at first (artwork and video clips, maybe the odd blog) but itíll let you know whatís happening with the record.

Peace and love forever.g.x

"celestial pedal steel"

I think that's the first time I've ever seen those three words run together.

Glad you're having fun and it's all going well.
Look forward to having a listen

January is shaping up to be very ambitious and accomplished month indeed! Glad to hear it's going well and that people with such talents are coming together so organically. Looking forward to all the new music this month has to offer whenever it crops up!

And hopefully you won't get yourself in too much trouble with running amok in bookstores. Though if you haven't yet read Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger, it's certainly worth picking up...

Great to get this anticipation again.
I like the title 'Silver Atoms'.
According to its titles the album already now sounds precious.

This sounds like it is going to be excellent! I can't wait to hear what you wrote about Mount Hood... Definitely one of my three favorite mountains Very Happy Others being Rainier and Baker. Enjoy the rest of your time in Portland, it is a great city indeed. And thank you for keeping us updated!

Country music ain't my thing, but that doesn't mean that I am not open-minded and if anyone can change my mind then Gary, you might just be the one to do it. I'm certainly curious.
